What is Len's Island?
At its core, Len's Island is a unique isometric survival game that blends two distinct halves.
By day, it's a peaceful and creative island-life simulator. You start with nothing on a beautiful, procedurally generated archipelago and must gather resources to build your home from scratch. The modular building system is a highlight, allowing for incredible creativity for any building enthusiast.
But deep below the serene surface lies the other half: dark, dangerous dungeons where the game becomes a skill-based action RPG. You'll venture into treacherous caves filled with monsters and traps to find valuable resources and face powerful bosses. This dual-loop system allows you to choose exactly how you want to spend your time.
Over our weekend of play, we found our time split almost equally between these two worlds.
The "overworld" was a joy for base building and farming, while the underworld offered a wealth of materials for our next construction project. The game features its own economy where you can earn gold by looting, questing, or selling goods—we found that fishing was a surprisingly effective and engaging way to build up our funds in the early game.
Standout Features
After spending several hours with the game, a few key features really stood out.
A Clever Micro-Economy: Unlike many survival games that focus solely on self-sufficiency, Len's Island includes gold and basic trade with NPC merchants. The time-to-gold earning rate feels well-balanced across different activities, depending on your character build. It adds a satisfying layer of progression and we look forward to seeing it expanded, perhaps with a sailing-based trade system between the game's multiple towns.
Engaging Fishing: For a feature that can often feel like a chore, fishing in Len's Island is fantastic. It's quick, engaging, and rewarding. Fish bite quickly, and a rhythm-based minigame determines your success, becoming more challenging with rarer catches. It never overstays its welcome.
Fast-Paced, Rhythmic Combat: Combat is simple but effective. You get in, engage, and clear out enemies quickly. Critical hits are based on timing your clicks, similar to the fishing minigame, which adds a welcome layer of skill. Our only pet peeve is that shields don't have collision with enemies, meaning they can't be used for body-blocking. For ranged players, arrows have environmental collision and can be retrieved after a miss—a nice, realistic touch.
Satisfying Sailing: By far our favorite feature. While basic, sailing in Len's Island is freeing and satisfying. It isn't dependent on wind direction, and your boat comes with storage compartments ( as of writing this issue has patched in the latest 3 patches!) . The freedom to move between islands and even fish out at sea is a blessing, and we hope this system is expanded with ship-building or even naval combat in the future.
Dev team:
The dev team is really proactive in ironing out issues that were brought up, as of writing they have since released 3 small patches rectifying common and potentially game breaking bugs such as immortality bug and vanishing ship storage.
we love to see the team working on the game passionately and actively.
The Verdict: Is It For You?
As a released game that has just hit its 1.0 milestone, Len's Island is perfect for the player who loves creative freedom but still wants the thrill of adventure without the overly punishing demands of some hardcore survival games. You can still lose your hard-won loot, but recovery is manageable.
Go for it if: You enjoy games like Valheim or Stardew Valley but wished you could blend their best parts together. The ability to switch between relaxing building and intense dungeon crawling at a moment's notice is its greatest strength. The addition of 8-player co-op also makes it a fantastic long-term world to build with friends.
Maybe pause if: You are looking for a deep, narrative-driven RPG. While there is lore to uncover, the focus is squarely on sandbox gameplay. Some players may also find the combat and progression less deep than more specialized action RPGs.
Len's Island presents itself as a beautiful and flexible sandbox that respects your choice of playstyle, making it a standout title that's easy to recommend in a crowded genre.
